title
Four Tier Model of AI-Augmented Student/Employee Capabilities
description
Now that AI is fully and freely available to everyone, we in academia, industry, and the rest of the world must now realize that generative AI has become a force multiplier to everone who can use it. But we must additionally have the understanding that there are multiple tiers to being fully competitive in our modernized environment. To be properly competitive in work, research, and everything else, we need to understand these four tiers of AI augmentation. Tier 1: Basic Knowledge (general degree/field understanding & AI literacy) This could be viewed as a high school or college degree Tier 2: Subject Matter Expert -OR- Basic Knowledge + AI Skills This actually means someone with a full degree/accreditation, a subject matter expert, and that now, someone with strong AI Skills (in their field) can compete pretty well against them. Tier 3: Subject Matter Expert + AI Skills Tier 2 can not compete against someone that is not only well educated (a subject matter expert) but also has strong AI skills within their field/subject matter. Tier 4: Subject Matter Expert + AI Skills + Soft Skills (emotional intelligence, creativity, critical thinking, professional communication, leadership, etc.) The highest tier, where we need to now develop students and were all need to achieve, is subject matter expertise, strong AI skills for their field, and needed soft skills (as those listed). The research listed below has found that this is where we are now due to ongoing developments in AI and our evolving work environment. All of us in academia must face this new reality in that we need to help students understand and fully realize this new tier reality for all jobs as well as research and work in any organization.
