Young Reporters for the Environment
description
Nature Trust FEE – Malta has in the past years given great importance to environmental education  – so much so that it is one of the three pillars on which the NGO is built. It was for this very reason that Nature Trust FEE – Malta are proud to be the representatives of FEE in the Maltese Islands since 2002. This opportunity opened the way for  schools to practice sustainable development. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization promoting sustainable development through environmental education. It was founded 29 years ago, and has designed 5 programmes focusing on Sustainable Development: Eco Schools, Blue Flag, YRE, LEAF and Green Key. Nature Trust FEE – Malta is currently running 4 programmes in Malta: EkoSkola, YRE, LEAF and Blue Flag. Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a programme designed specifically for secondary and post secondary students. Upper primary can participate through the Press Kids programme.  The main aim is to carry out investigations on local environmental issues and propose solutions through investigative reporting and photojournalism.  The goal of YRE is to engage youth in resolving environmental problems and issues. The Young Reporters for the Environment concept originated with FEEE France in 1991, during an international youth mission to Kiruna (Sweden) to understand the ozone layer depletion and explain the problem to a larger public audience. In that frame, the ozone layer problem revealed how far environmental issues can be complex, and how essential it is to explain how basic local behaviour can be responsible for global complex problems. To propose a programme answering to this issue, journalistic investigation was quickly identified as a powerful tool to work in the frame of a motivating school project. In 1994, Young Reporters for the Environment became a programme of FEE and since then has grown to reach countries outside of Europe.
